CAN STUDENT ATHLETES USE PRE-WORKOUT DRINKS LIKE TOTAL WAR ON CAMPUS?
The majority of performance enhancement products are not FDA certified. Thus, the manufactures are held to zero standards of what they actually put in the product. Most are formulated overseas. Most are formulated in manufacturing plants that produce other products without cross contamination practices. The NCAA puts out band substance list annually. If the NCAA bans it for adult athletes then the governance is set for youth athletes. Also, on every PES container and energy drink (even products that are trusted like Advocare) have a statement listed “Not recommended for anyone under the age of 18”.
The NCAA and professional sports spend millions to look for safe PES. They came up with the NSF to check that what the manufacture says is in the product actually is. We educate our kids and parents if they are going to use something it has to have the NSF seal on it. We heavily preach against PES. We do not allow any PES on our campuses. There have been coaches that have lost their teacher/coaching licenses due to ethics violations for selling/distributing products out of their school’s athletic facilities. This is a huge no-no!

The consent form shall include authorization to administer the medication and relieve the Board and its employees of civil liability for damages or injuries resulting from the administration of medication to students in accordance with this policy. All signed medication consent forms are to be maintained by the school nurse.
Unless authorized to self-administer or otherwise authorized by this policy, students are not allowed to carry any medications, including over-the-counter (OTC) medications or any dietary supplement or other perceived health remedy not regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration while at school. The parent or legal guardian shall bring the student’s medication to the school nurse. The student may bring the medication if accompanied by a written authorization from the parent or legal guardian. When medications are brought to the school nurse, the nurse shall document, in the presence of the parent, the quantity of the medication(s). Question: Are Emergency Stock Medications Required?
The law is not exactly clear, some interpret it to be “shall” and some do not. So this is how I direct, if you have the School Board Association Policy adoption for the district, voted on by the school board, then yes it is a shall. They say it is required. It is also supported by the Arkansas Administrators Education Association (AAEA) to have these medications in schools and to have policy. If so, then acquiring a local physician to have a memorandum of understanding (MOU) it is what it takes to do this. You will need prescriptions for these medications. I am attaching all the documents needed to for the MOU and the guidelines for albuterol and epinephrine and the ability to get free Narcan. Please note if an unlicensed person, not a nurse, plans to give these medications they have to be trained by a nationally recognized program such as RedCross or American Heart Association and the prescribing physician has to be okay with the lay person with the administration of Epinephrine and Albuterol. As a School Nurses it is always a good idea they train staff as well on these if their MOU from the physician states others besides a nurse can administer.
ARE BUS DRIVERS REQUIRED TO BE CPR CERTIFIED?
They are not required unless they are a licensed nurse driving and providing care for SPED student. Some districts have hired nurses to drive buses for this reason. It isn’t in law or code.
