Description
Distress Tolerance: A Foundational Skill
Why would I want or need to tolerate distress?
It doesn't sound like a pleasant thing to talk about ... but getting that cavity filled isn't pleasant, having that difficult conversation isn't pleasant, and learning anything new for the first time can be pretty unpleasant too!
Students today can benefit from clear and effective strategies for tolerating distress and discomfort. These skills can help our young people to understand that a certain amount of distress and discomfort is a normal part of being human, and we have a lot of options for how we deal with this distress. Some young people find themselves coping by using substances, non-suicidal self-injury, avoidance, or withdrawal; but there are better ways.
This presentation will discuss strategies and skills to build resilience in youth by helping them tolerate distress.
